[al-Isrā’, 17:57]
Those that they worship (i.e., they prepare sculptures and images of angels, jinn, the Prophet ‘Isa [Jesus], ‘Uzayr [Ezra] and others and worship them) look for mediation to their Lord (themselves) as to who amongst them is most intimate (in the presence of Allah). And they (themselves) hope for His mercy and fear His torment. (Now say yourselves how they can be gods. They are prostrating themselves before the True God.) Indeed, the torment of your Lord is a thing to fear.
Note:
This verse from Surah al-Isra' in the Quran criticizes the worship of idols and images by highlighting their absurdity. It emphasizes that those worshipped by people (such as angels, jinn, Jesus, and Ezra) themselves seek closeness to God, hope for His mercy, and fear His punishment. The verse questions how these objects of worship can be considered gods when they themselves are in submission to the one true God.
How can those whom you worship (such as angels, jinn, Jesus, and Ezra) be considered gods when they themselves seek closeness to Allah, hope for His mercy, and fear His punishment? Can these beings, who prostrate before the True God, truly be gods? Indeed, the torment of your Lord is something to fear.
