Surah Ghāfir, 40:55

The translators as quoted below have used these words for Nabi E Kareem ﷺ

❌ Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings.

❌ misjudgments
❌ ask forgiveness for your misdeed
❌ seek forgiveness for your sin
❌ ask forgiveness for your guilty (deed),
❌ ask forgiveness for thy fault
❌ Seek forgiveness for your offence
40:55
فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّۭ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِبْكَـٰرِ ٥٥
So be patient ˹O Prophet˺, ˹for˺ Allah’s promise is certainly true. Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings.[1] And glorify the praises of your Lord morning and evening.
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
[1] Like other prophets, Muḥammad (ﷺ) was infallible of sin. The verse here refers to misjudgments, such as the Prophet’s response to the blind man (80:1-10), Jonah’s departure from his city without Allah’s permission (21:87-88), and David’s suspicions of the two men who scaled the wall of his sanctuary (38:21-25). If the Prophet (ﷺ) himself is urged to seek forgiveness, then the believers are even more in need of praying for Allah’s forgiveness.
Be steadfast then (O Prophet) Allah's promise is true.Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings and celebrate the praise of your Lord evening and morning.
~ Maududi
So be patient indeed the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for your misdeed and exalt your Lord with praise evening and morning.
Fadel Soliman, Bridges’ translation
O Messenger, be patient on the denial and harm by your people which you face. Allah’s promise of help and support to you is true without doubt. And seek forgiveness for your sin and glorify the praise of your Lord at the beginning and end of the day.
Abridged Explanation of the Quran
So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin[1] and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
Saheeh International
[1]What is intended is in judgement, since all prophets were protected by Allāh from falling into sin. The implication is that all believers should seek forgiveness for their sins.
So, be patient -- surely the promise of Allah is true - and seek forgiveness for your sins, and proclaim the purity and praise of your Lord in the afternoon and at dawn.
Maarif-ul-Quran
So, be patient - surely the promise of Allah is true - and seek forgiveness for your sins, and proclaim the purity and praise of your Lord in the afternoon and at dawn.
Mufti Taqi Usmani
So (endure) patiently; (This is addressed to the Prophet) surely the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for your guilty (deed), and extol with the praise of your Lord at nightfall and before the rising of the sun.
Dr. Ghali
So be patient, Prophet, for what God has promised is sure to come. Ask forgiveness for your sins; praise your Lord morning and evening.
Abdul Haleem
Be steadfast, then, (O Prophet), Allah's promise is true.Seek forgiveness for your shortcomings and celebrate the praise of your Lord, evening and morning.
Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi
[1]“Have patience”: Bear up with a cool mind against these hardships through which you are passing.
[2]The allusion is to the promise made above in the sentence: We do help Our Messengers and the believers in the life of this world.
[3]A study of the context shows that here “sin” implies the state of impatience that was being caused to the Prophet (peace be upon him) on account of the severe antagonism, especially the persecution of his followers. He earnestly desired that either some miracle should be shown, which should convince the disbelievers or something else should soon come down from Allah, which should quell the storm of opposition. Though this desire in itself was not a sin, which should have called for repentance, the high rank with which Allah had blessed the Prophet (peace be upon him) demanded great grit and will power; so the little impatience shown by him was regarded as inconsistent with his high rank. Therefore, he was required to ask Allah’s forgiveness for showing the weakness and was told to hold his ground like a rock as a man of a high rank like him should.
[4]That is, Glorification of Allah with His praises is the only means by which those who work for the sake of Allah can get the strength to resist and overcome the hardships faced in the way of Allah. Glorifying the Lord morning and evening can have two meanings:
Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness of thy sin, and hymn the praise of thy Lord at fall of night and in the early hours.
English Translation (Pickthall)
Patiently, then, persevere: for the Promise of Allah is true: and ask forgiveness for thy fault, and celebrate the Praises of thy Lord in the evening and in the morning.
English Translation (Yusuf Ali)
So be patient, for Allah’s promise is true. Seek forgiveness for your sin, and glorify your Lord with His praise evening and morning.
Ruwwad Center
so be patient: Allah (God)'s promise is true! Seek forgiveness for your offence and hymn Allah (God)'s praise at evening and in the morning hours.
Dr. T. B. Irving
So be patient (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم). Verily, the Promise of Allâh is true, and ask forgiveness for your fault[1] and glorify the praises of your Lord in the ‘Ashî (i.e. the time period after the midnoon till sunset) and in the Ibkâr (i.e. the time period from early morning or sunrise till before midnoon) [it is said that, that means the five compulsory congregational Salât (prayers) or the ‘Asr and Fajr prayers].
Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Muhammad Muhsin Khan
[1](V.55) See the footnote of (Verse 4:106).

✅ Now let us analyse the Translations from Ahlus'Sunnah wa Jamaat
[Ghāfir, 40:55]
فَاصۡبِرۡ اِنَّ وَعۡدَ اللّٰہِ حَقٌّ وَّ اسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۡۢبِکَ وَ سَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّکَ بِالۡعَشِیِّ وَ الۡاِبۡکَارِ ﴿۵۵﴾
So keep patience. Assuredly, the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for the sins of your Umma (Community),* and glorify your Lord with His praise in the evening and in the morning.
* In ‘li-dhanbi-ka’ the co-related noun is Umma which is omitted. On this basis, therefore, the verse ‘wa-staghfir li-dhanbi-ka’ denotes the sins committed by Umma. The leading scholars, Imam al-Nasafi, Imam al-Qurtubi and ‘Allama al-Shawkani, have drawn the same meaning. For references, see the following: 1. ‘Wa-staghfir li-dhanbi-ka’ means ‘li-dhanbi Ummati-ka’, that is, the sins of your Umma. (al-Nasafi in Madarik al-Tanzil wa Haqa’iq al-Ta’wil, 4:359.) 2. ‘Wa-staghfir li-dhanbi-ka’ means ‘li-dhanbi Ummati-ka’. Hudhifa al-mudaf wa uqima al-mudaf il-ayh maqama-hu’. It is stated that ‘wa-staghfir li-dhanbi-ka’ implies the sins of Umma. The co-related noun has been omitted in the given phrase and is represented by the noun it is co-related to. (al-Qurtubi in al-Jami‘ li-Ahkam al-Qur’an, 15:324.) 3. Wa qila li-dhanbi Ummati-ka fi haqqi-ka. This is also expositioned that li-dhanbi-ka means for the misdeeds committed by Umma pertaining to what is your due. (Ibn Hayyan al-Andalusi in Bahr al-Muhit, 7:471.) 4. ‘Wa-staghfir li-dhanbi-ka’ means ‘dhanbi Ummati-ka, fa-huwa ‘ala hadhfi al-mudaf’. It implies the sins of Umma and this interpretation is based on omission of the co-related noun. (al-Shawkani in Fath al-Qadir, 4:497.)
