Qur'aan and foundation for our understanding of nociceptors as specialized sensory receptors for pain
In the 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝗤𝘂𝗿ʾan, human physiology is evident, as Allāh reveals concepts that science has only recently begun to understand. A significant advancement came in the late 19th century when German physiologist Max von Frey identified specialized nerve endings in the skin that responded to mechanical stimulation and transmitted pain signals. This discovery laid the foundation for our understanding of nociceptors as specialized sensory receptors for pain. Specifically, he made this identification in the 1890s, but this concept was already stated in the Qurʾān 1,446 years ago:
“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a fire. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵, 𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.”
[Sūrah an-Nisāʾ, verse 56]
