Many pilgrims died during this Hajj 2024 due to the extreme heat. May Allah grant all these pilgrims the full reward of Hajj and elevate their ranks. There are various reasons for these deaths, and the purpose here is to mention two primary causes.
1. About 99% percent of the deceased were elderly. Hajj is a highly strenuous physical act of worship in addition to being a financial one. When it is postponed until old age, it creates numerous difficulties. Therefore, there is a need to promote performing Hajj during youth and good health.
2. Another reason for these deaths is the "ignorant and short-sighted" people who try their best to keep such elderly individuals away from the concessions provided by Allah in this regard. For example, stoning the Jamarat and spending nights in Mina are among the obligatory acts. But the scholars are well aware of when and for whom there are concessions in these obligations, and they guide people accordingly.
However, when these "ignorant" people try to become muftis, they not only deny these concessions due to their ignorance but also do not hesitate to shame and taunt those who follow them. As a result, those deserving of concessions are forced to risk their lives, and some of them lose their lives.
For such ignorant people, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has this curse: "May Allah destroy them!"
The background of this curse is that during a journey, a companion had wounds, and ghusl (ritual bath) became obligatory for him. He asked the people around him if he had a concession to perform tayammum (dry ablution). They said no, as water was available, so he had to perform ghusl. Those giving the fatwa knew about the obligation of ghusl but were unaware of the concessions. As a result, he performed ghusl, which led to his death.
So, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) held those fatwa-givers responsible for his death, saying, "They killed him; may Allah destroy them!"
Even now, there are many such "ignorant muftis" behind the deaths of these pilgrims, and they are undoubtedly deserving of the indictment and curse pronounced by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ): "They killed him; may Allah destroy them!"
