When Palestine was conquered, a priest said to Amīr al-Muʾminīn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb: “You are the leader of the Muslims, it is not befitting that you ride a camel in here. If you ride a Turkish horse and wear some other clothing, it would command more respect in the eyes of the Romans.” Sayyidunā ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb replied: “𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮̄𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲.”

He also stated, “Verily, we were a disgraceful people and Allāh honored us with Islām. If we seek honor from anything besides that with which Allāh honored us, Allāh will disgrace us.”
