How to become Aulia Allah?
■ How to become Aulia Allah?
Once Hazrat Imam Sufyan Thawri (r) went to the Tigris River to bathe. It was Friday. He took off his clothes and started bathing. Suddenly, a thief came and stole his clothes. When he finished bathing and came out, the clothes were gone. While he was sitting there worried, the thief returned with the clothes. He handed the clothes back and said that the right hand with which he had stolen the clothes had become paralyzed.
Hazrat Imam Sufyan Thawri raised his hands and prayed: "My Rab! Just as You have returned my clothes, restore the health of this thief's hand as well." By his prayer, the thief's hand was healed.
This is good behavior, this is good attitude, this is good conduct, this is spirituality, this is Sufism, this is Karamah, this is excellence – that he even prays for his thief.
• We must remove anger from our nature and replace it with patience and tolerance.
• We must remove narrow-mindedness and replace it with generosity.
• We must eliminate harshness from our nature because it is a burden and useless, as it has never benefited anyone.
• We must protect ourselves from envy.
Envy is a form of self-torture, and the envious person subjects themselves to torment.
*What is envy?*
Envy means that we do not like Allah's decree/decision. Since Allah is the one who gives, we are objecting to His distribution. Envy is a form of disbelief because it is a rejection of Allah's decree. The people of Allah do not envy anyone for any blessing but are happy for them.
*How to avoid envy*
The simple solution to avoid envy is to be content with what Allah has given. Be happy with Allah's decisions regarding others, and Allah will also bless you.
*To Do Task*
*We need to remove anger and narrow-mindedness from our nature and bring in tolerance and kindness. Avoid subjecting ourselves to the torment of envy. The solution is to be happy with Allah's gifts.
Shaykh Muhammad bin Isa al-Qurashi (r) was among the great Aulia Allah. He said that his father, who was also among the great Wali Allah and leaders of his time, advised him:
"My son, I give you five pieces of advice:
• If someone acts foolishly with you, treats you unjustly, or gets into an argument with you, act with patience and tolerance.
• If someone behaves stupidly, bear it.
• If someone does evil to you, ignore/forgive it.
• In life, whenever you get a chance to reconcile with friends, immediately remove the grudge and cleanse your heart of its filth.
• Be such that your friends feel safe with you. Maintain such a character that even your enemies are ashamed before you.
*The Qualities of Aulia Allah*
When a person possesses these six qualities, consider them to be among Aulia Allah:
• If they receive even a small blessing, they are grateful.
• If they face great hardship, they remain patient.
• If they deal with a miser, they act generously.
• They do not show displeasure even at the wrong behavior of the ignorant.
• Their acts of worship are consistent, whether anyone is watching or not (avoiding hypocrisy in their actions).
• They do not reduce their good deeds in response to the evil actions of others.
*All of this is because their sincerity is so strong that it does not allow hypocrisy to enter.*
Saydina Bāyazīd Bistāmī said:
The conduct is Karamah when Isteqamah - steadfastness in one's state - Ahwaal is high.
Saydina Junaid Baghdadi (r) was asked about the condition of Aulia Allah regarding compassion for creation.
He replied: Show compassion to creation in such a way that you give them what they ask for, even if you need it yourself. Do not burden them with what they cannot bear. Do not speak to them about what they cannot understand.
He further said: "Look for excuses for people yourself, do not wait for their apologies, and protect them from embarrassment. The excuse they would give should come to your understanding by itself.
Then he said about himself:
"My condition is such that if a fly sits on my friend's face, I feel the pain."
This is a reflection of the حریص علیکم Prophet's concern for his followers because the friends of Allah are actually reflections of the Prophet's character.
