Life After Death in Islam

After death, the human soul embarks on its journey through the realm of Barzakh, known as either Illiyin (عليين) or Sijjin (سجين).

"No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin' (عليين)." (Quran 83:18)

The Prophet ﷺ said, 

"The soul of the believer is like a bird hanging on the trees of Paradise until Allah returns it to his body on the Day of Resurrection." 

(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 20711)

"No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in 'Sijjin' (سجين)." (Quran 83:7)

The Prophet ﷺ said, 

"The soul of the disbeliever is imprisoned in the lowest earth, in 'Sijjin' (سجين)." 

(Sunan an-Nasa'i, Hadith 1833)
