Shariah and Tariqah in our lives. Both paths bring us closer to Allah, yet each has its unique characteristics and objectives.
There are four major schools of thought in Shariah: Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali, and Maliki. These four schools teach us the exoteric (outer) knowledge and acquaint us with the religious sciences. Through them, we learn the foundations of worship, transactions, and ethics. These schools provide us with a systematic and comprehensive way of living a life in accordance with Islamic principles.
Similarly, in Tariqah, there are some major Sufi orders: Qadiri, Chishti, Ashrafiya, Naqshbandi, Suhrawardi, Shadhili, etc. Their purpose is to purify and refine our inner selves. The path of Tariqah guides us towards inner purity, immersion in the Zikr of Allah, and spiritual growth. These orders help us in self-reformation, love of Allah, and the quest for spiritual tranquility.
Beyond Shariah and Tariqah lie the stages of Marifah (gnosis) and Haqiqah (truth). These stages are the domain of the spiritually elite, where a believer's spiritual insight and inner light are heightened. The stages of Wahdat (unity) and Wahidiyat (uniqueness) remind us of the oneness of Allah and our closeness to Him.
Each path is unique, but all paths are a means to achieve the pleasure and proximity of Allah.
May Allah grant us the ability to adhere to Shariah, follow Tariqah, and understand and practice the stages of Marifah and Haqiqah. Ameen.
وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ آمين بجاه النبي الكريمﷺ
